What is alternative text?

Alternative text or alt text is a word or phrase which gives context to an image to users of assistive technology. Alt text provides a description and function of an image for:

  • users with little or no vision
  • users with cognitive disabilities
  • users who have turned off images to save data

In addition, if the URL of an image link is broken or changed the alt text appears in its place. This can improve the user experience for those experiencing technical issues on a webpage. Below is the alt text of the image logo on the Silvertone Hills good site homepage.
